Zimbabwean cardiothoracic surgeons make major medical breakthrough

On Tuesday, three Zimbabwean cardiothoracic surgeons collaborated with a colleague from Spain to perform an extensive uniportal video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe. This marked the first time that this type of surgery has been performed in the country.

VATS is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows surgeons to access and operate on the chest cavity through a single small incision, rather than making multiple large incisions. This approach reduces the risk of complications and shortens the recovery time for patients.

The team of Zimbabwean surgeons, led by Dr. Chipo Mukarati, had been training for this procedure for several months and had received support from the Spanish colleague, who provided guidance and expertise in the use of VATS technology.

During the surgery, the team successfully removed a diseased lung and performed other necessary procedures to treat the patient's condition. The patient is expected to make a full recovery and return to normal activities within a few weeks.

This breakthrough marks a significant milestone in the field of cardiothoracic surgery in Zimbabwe, as it demonstrates the country's ability to perform complex medical procedures and collaborate with international partners to improve healthcare outcomes for its citizens.
