SMU suspends CB Teddy Knox as he faces felony charges from multi-vehicle crash involving Chiefs' Rashee Rice

On March 31, 2023, Southern Methodist University (SMU) suspended senior cornerback Teddy Knox from all team activities following his involvement in a multi-vehicle crash that left one person dead and several others injured. The incident occurred in Dallas, Texas, and involved Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice, who also turned himself in to the police on the same day.

According to reports, the accident happened around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Harry Hines Boulevard and Inwood Road. Police stated that a 2017 Dodge Challenger, driven by Rice, was traveling at a high speed when it collided with a 2016 Mercedes-Benz, which was being driven by a 24-year-old man named Javion Sullivan. The impact of the collision caused the Mercedes to spin out of control and strike a tree, resulting in Sullivan's death.

Both Rice and Knox were passengers in the Challenger at the time of the accident. They were reportedly leaving a party when the incident occurred. Both individuals were charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault, which are felonies in the state of Texas.

Rice, a former SMU Mustang, was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He was released by the team following the news of his involvement in the accident.

As for Knox, he was a key player for the Mustangs during the 2022 season, starting in all 13 games and recording 41 tackles and three interceptions. With his suspension from the team, his football future remains uncertain.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, and more details are expected to be released in the coming days. The families of those involved in the accident have been notified and are grieving the loss of their loved one. Our thoughts go out to them during this difficult time.

It is important to note that all individuals involved in this incident are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
