El Niño expected to affect up to 80 provinces – task force

El Niño is a weather phenomenon that occurs when the surface waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than average. This can cause changes in weather patterns around the world, including in the Philippines. According to Task Force El Niño spokesperson Joey Villarama, as of February 25th, 2023, there are currently 51 provinces affected by El Niño, which is an increase from the previous 41. This means that more than half of the country's provinces are experiencing adverse effects from the weather phenomenon.

However, Villarama also warned that the number of provinces affected by El Niño may continue to rise. He said that it is possible that up to 80 provinces may experience the adverse effects of El Niño, with only two provinces spared. This means that a significant portion of the country's population and infrastructure could be impacted by the weather phenomenon.

It is important for individuals and communities in affected areas to take precautions to protect themselves and their property from the potential impacts of El Niño. This may include stocking up on food and water, securing homes and businesses, and staying informed about any changes in weather patterns. It is also important for government agencies and organizations to work together to provide support and assistance to those affected by El Niño.
