Kyle Palmieri scores OT winner as Islanders top Canadiens 3-2 for 6th straight victory

In an exciting National Hockey League (NHL) game on March 28, 2023, the New York Islanders secured their sixth consecutive victory by defeating the Montreal Canadiens with a score of 3-2 in overtime. The game was played at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, and was a crucial matchup between two Eastern Conference teams.

The first period saw both teams creating scoring opportunities, but neither was able to find the back of the net. The second period began with a bang when Montreal's Pierre Engvall opened the scoring for his team, capitalizing on a power play opportunity at 4:45. However, the Islanders responded just minutes later when Casey Cizikas netted the equalizer at 8:54, assisted by Brock Nelson and Adam Pelech.

The third period was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the net. Montreal's Cole Caufield restored the Canadiens' lead at 14:48, but once again, the Islanders answered back quickly. With just 1:05 remaining in regulation time, Kyle Palmieri tied the game at 2-2, scoring his 28th goal of the season, assisted by Matt Martin and Noah Dobson.

The game headed into overtime, where the pressure was high on both sides. With just 1:07 remaining in the extra period, Palmieri struck again, scoring the game-winning goal and extending the Islanders' winning streak to six games. Semyon Varlamov made 13 saves in the win, while Sam Montembault made 30 saves for Montreal.

The victory moved the Islanders into third place in the Metropolitan Division, with 89 points, three points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who have three games remaining in the regular season. Palmieri's goal was his fourth consecutive goal, making him a key contributor in the Islanders' impressive winning streak.

The Canadiens, on the other hand, suffered their loss despite strong performances from Cole Caufield, who scored a goal and recorded an assist, and Jordan Harris, who also found the net. Montreal will look to bounce back in their next game against the Boston Bruins on March 30, while the Islanders will face the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 31.
