Auston Matthews scores 67th and 68th goals of season in Maple Leafs’ 6-5 loss to Devils

The New Jersey Devils handed the Toronto Maple Leafs a disappointing 6-5 loss at the Prudential Center on Thursday, March 23, 2023. This defeat came despite the heroic efforts of Toronto's star player, Auston Matthews, who scored not one, but two goals, bringing his total for the season to an impressive 68. These goals marked the most goals scored by any player in the NHL since Mario Lemieux netted 69 during the 1995-96 campaign.

Matthews' first goal, which came in the first period, tied the game at 2-2, while his second, scored midway through the third period, put him momentarily ahead of Lemieux on the all-time list for most goals in a single season since that legendary campaign by the Hall of Famer. However, the Devils were not deterred, and Jesper Bratt capitalized on an opportunity late in the third period, breaking the tie with just over two minutes remaining on the clock. Bratt's second goal of the night proved to be the game-winner, securing the victory for New Jersey.

Bratt's impressive performance did not stop there, as he also contributed an assist, making it a three-point night for him. Timo Meier, another standout player for the Devils, added two goals and an assist, while Erik Haula and Nolan Foote also found the back of the net for New Jersey. Goaltender Jake Allen made 27 saves on the night, earning the win for his team.

The Maple Leafs were not without their own offensive contributions, as John Tavares scored twice for Toronto, while David Kampf added another goal. Ilya Samsonov, who started in net for Toronto, made 14 saves before being relieved by backup goaltender Jack Campbell late in the third period.

The Devils' victory came in a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair, with both teams displaying impressive offensive prowess. Despite Matthews' heroics, the Devils ultimately emerged victorious, demonstrating their resilience and determination to secure the win. The defeat was a disappointing one for Toronto, who will look to bounce back in their next game.
