Chiefs' Rice surrenders to police on crash charges

Rashee Rice, a former professional football player who most recently played for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL), turned himself in to the police on Thursday, October 27, 2022. The arrest warrants for Rice had been issued the previous day by the Overland Park Police Department in Johnson County, Kansas.

The charges against Rice include one count of aggravated assault, which is a felony offense that can result in up to five years in prison if convicted. Aggravated assault is defined as an intentional act that causes harm or injury to another person through the use of a deadly weapon or by inflicting serious bodily harm.

Additionally, Rice faces one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, which is also a felony charge. This offense refers to an accident that results in the injury or impairment of another person, with the potential for significant harm or long-term consequences.

Furthermore, Rice is charged with six counts of collision involving injury, which is a misdemeanor offense. This charge pertains to accidents that result in the injury or harm of another person, with each count representing a separate incident.

The details surrounding the incidents that led to these charges are not yet clear, but the Overland Park Police Department has stated that the investigation is ongoing. It is unknown at this time whether there are any victims or if there are any other individuals involved in the incidents.

Rice was a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2021 NFL season. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the team in May 2021 and made his NFL debut in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens. He went on to play in 11 games during the regular season, catching 15 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown.

The Chiefs released a statement following the news of Rice's arrest, expressing their concern for those affected by the incidents and stating that they are cooperating fully with the investigation. The team also announced that Rice has been placed on the non-football injury list, effectively ending his tenure with the team for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Rice is currently being held in the Johnson County Detention Center, with his bond set at $100,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 3, 2022. The outcome of this case will likely have significant implications for Rice's future both personally and professionally.
