Giants sign Jordan Phillips to fill A’Shawn Robinson defensive-line void

The New York Giants have signed free agent defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to a one-year contract worth up to $7 million, according to multiple reports. Phillips is expected to replace A'Shawn Robinson in the starting lineup for the Giants' defensive front.

Phillips, 28, spent the last two seasons with the Miami Dolphins after starting his career with the Buffalo Bills (2015-2017) and the Dolphins (2018). In 2020, he recorded 4.5 sacks and 26 tackles (17 solo) in 15 games for Miami.

Robinson, who was a 2016 second-round pick of the Detroit Lions, joined the Giants as a free agent before the 2019 season. He started 15 games for New York that year and recorded 45 tackles (28 solo) and 1.5 sacks. However, he missed all of the 2020 season due to a torn biceps tendon suffered during training camp.

With Robinson's injury and subsequent absence, the Giants' defensive line was thin and struggled at times during the 2020 season. The addition of Phillips should provide some much-needed depth and experience to the position.

Phillips is known for his quickness and ability to penetrate the offensive line, which should fit well with the Giants' defensive scheme under coordinator Patrick Graham. He has started 63 of 72 career games and has 23.5 sacks and 153 tackles (93 solo) over his six NFL seasons.

The Giants' defensive line was already a position of need heading into free agency, and the addition of Phillips should help solidify the unit and improve the team's overall defense. The signing also gives New York some flexibility with their roster, as they could potentially address other positions of need with their remaining cap space.

Overall, the acquisition of Jordan Phillips is a significant move for the New York Giants as they look to rebuild their defense and compete in a crowded NFC East division. The team is hoping that his addition will provide a boost to their interior pass rush and help improve their run defense.
