Smith clips Bellamy 'rubbish' amid Souths rumour

In early February 2023, Australian rugby league football great Cameron Smith took a playful jab at his long-time coach, Craig Bellamy, during an interview with Triple M radio, in response to speculation linking Bellamy with the vacant head coaching position at South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Smith, who retired from professional rugby league football in 2020 after an illustrious career with the Melbourne Storm, was asked about the possibility of Bellamy joining his former club's arch-rivals, the Rabbitohs. In response, Smith quipped, "I don't think Craig will be going anywhere near the Rabbitohs. I think he'll be sticking with us, and if not, he'll be in the rubbish."

The "rubbish" comment was a reference to the Rabbitohs' nickname and their traditional red and green colours, which are often referred to as "rabbit poo" or "rubbish" by rival fans. Smith's remark was met with laughter from the radio hosts and listeners, highlighting the intense rivalry between the Melbourne Storm and South Sydney Rabbitohs in the National Rugby League (NRL).

At the time of Smith's comment, there were reports suggesting that Bellamy was considering a move to the Rabbitohs after his contract with Melbourne expired at the end of the 2023 season. However, Bellamy later denied any interest in joining South Sydney and reaffirmed his commitment to the Melbourne Storm.

Craig Bellamy has been the head coach of Melbourne Storm since 2003, leading the team to eight NRL premiership titles during his tenure. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in rugby league history and has been linked with several high-profile coaching positions in the past, including the Australian national team and other NRL clubs. However, he has consistently stated his intention to remain with Melbourne until he feels it is time to retire from coaching.

The Melbourne Storm and South Sydney Rabbitohs have a long-standing rivalry that dates back to the early days of the NRL. The two teams have met in numerous grand finals and high-stakes matches over the years, with each team boasting a rich history and passionate fan base. The banter between players and coaches from both sides only adds fuel to the fire, making the rivalry all the more intense and exciting for fans.
