15th MEU Conducts ERC Training Aboard a CH-53E [Image 2 of 7]

The U.S. 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) conducted En Route Care (ERC) training aboard a CH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter from Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron VMM 158 Reinforced (VMMT-158), on April 9, 2024, in the South China Sea. The CH-53E Super Stallion is a heavy-lift helicopter operated by the U.S. Marine Corps, capable of transporting troops, vehicles, and supplies over long distances.

The 15th MEU is an amphibious force, consisting of a battalion-sized combat element, an aviation combat element, a logistics combat element, and a combat service support element, embarked aboard the amphibious transport dock USS Somerset (LPD-25). The USS Somerset, with the 15th MEU embarked, is part of the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet, which is the largest forward-deployed numbered fleet in the world.

The 7th Fleet is responsible for maintaining maritime security and preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region, routinely interacting and operating with allies and partners in the area. The training was part of the routine operations and readiness drills conducted by the 15th MEU and USS Somerset in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.

During the ERC training, U.S. Sailors from the 15th MEU provided medical care to a simulated casualty aboard the CH-53E helicopter. En Route Care is an essential capability for the Marine Corps, enabling medical personnel to provide life-saving treatment to wounded personnel during transportation from the battlefield to a medical treatment facility, increasing their chances of survival.

The training provided an opportunity for the Marines to practice their skills in a realistic environment, ensuring they are prepared for potential contingencies and able to provide the best possible care for their wounded comrades during transportation. The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps' commitment to maintaining their readiness and capabilities is crucial in preserving peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
