We fuss over insults to men. How about some fuss about the killing of women?

The issue of gender-based violence, particularly the killing of women, is a significant and pressing concern worldwide. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, most frequently by an intimate partner. This equates to an estimated 736 million women alive today who have been affected by this form of violence.

The consequences of gender-based violence are far-reaching and devastating. It can lead to physical injuries, mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, substance abuse, and even death. In fact, violence against women is a leading cause of death and disability among women aged 15-44.

One of the most alarming forms of gender-based violence is femicide, which is the intentional killing of women because of their gender. Femicide can take many forms, including intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and honor killings.

Intimate partner violence is a common form of gender-based violence that can result in death. According to WHO, nearly 1 in 10 women have experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner in the past 12 months. In some regions, such as South Asia and Africa, the prevalence is even higher. Intimate partner violence can lead to physical injuries, mental health problems, and even death.

Sexual violence is another form of gender-based violence that can result in death. According to a study published in The Lancet, approximately 1 in 20 women have experienced sexual violence by an intimate partner in the past year. Sexual violence can lead to physical injuries, mental health problems, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Honor killings are a form of gender-based violence that are motivated by the belief that a woman has brought shame upon her family. Honor killings often result in death and can involve stoning, burning, or other forms of violence. According to UN Women, an estimated 5,000 women and girls are killed each year due to honor killings.

The killing of women is a serious issue that deserves our attention and action. It is important to recognize that gender-based violence is not just a women's issue, but a human rights issue that affects us all. It is important for individuals, communities, and governments to take steps to prevent gender-based violence and support survivors. This can include education and awareness campaigns, policies to protect women's rights, and services for survivors of violence.

In response to the question, if men were bigger and stronger than women and one of them picked us off every week, we would undoubtedly be outraged and demand action to stop the violence. The same should hold true for gender-based violence against women. It is our responsibility to stand up against this violence and support efforts to prevent it and protect survivors.
