U.S. Coast Guard continues to strengthen ties with Republic of Palau

The U.S. Coast Guard's involvement in the Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) with the Republic of Palau, held from March 18 to 22, 2024, in Honolulu, Hawaii, signifies the continuation of efforts to bolster partnerships and enhance cooperation between the two countries in the areas of maritime security and regional stability.

The JCM is a high-level forum that brings together representatives from both the U.S. and Palauan governments to discuss various issues related to their bilateral relationship. The meeting in 2024 marked another significant step forward in the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

The U.S. Coast Guard's participation in the JCM was led by Forces Micronesia Sector Guam. This sector is responsible for enforcing federal laws and regulations within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surrounding the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau. The sector's involvement in the JCM demonstrates the importance the U.S. places on collaborating with its Pacific Island partners to address common maritime security challenges and promote regional stability.

During the JCM, the delegations discussed various topics, including maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, environmental protection, and disaster response. The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to share best practices, coordinate efforts, and explore potential areas for further collaboration.

The U.S. Coast Guard's presence at the JCM also highlighted the importance of the Compact of Free Association (COFA) between the United States and the Republic of Palau. Signed in 1994, the COFA agreement grants the United States exclusive rights to maintain military facilities on Palauan territory and provides for various forms of economic assistance to the island nation. The maritime security aspect of the partnership is a crucial component of the COFA agreement, as the U.S. is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of Palau's maritime borders.

The JCM in 2024 was just one example of the ongoing efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard to strengthen its partnership with the Republic of Palau and contribute to the overall stability and security of the Pacific region. By working together, the United States and Palau can address common challenges, enhance their capabilities, and promote peace and prosperity for their citizens.
